Are we there yet?

Honeycomb dress with embellishment constellation- work in progress

I’m currently working on a piece that is reminding me of my Himalayan trekking adventures many moons ago- although that experience actually took me 4 weeks, this piece has taken a bit longer than that. But I have noticed that I am applying a few similar strategies to see myself through to the other side of the summit.

-Drinking lots of hot water.

-Photo documenting my way along the path, to map my journey, and encourage progression.

-Pausing for breaks when the donkey rampage comes charging down the path (a.k.a. obstacles)

-Enjoying a quiet celebration of this work along the way- Living dreams!

I have stitched countless honeycombs into a flared dress, across which I have screen printed, then ribbon embroidered and am now beading a path towards completion.

Taking it stitch by stitch, I’ll get there.

Flow ON!

There’s nothing like the bounty of textural inspiration and colour to get the flow on!

I’m working on a new commission piece for a very special client. I’m so excited, I’m throwing ribbons and fabrics all over the place! I love to start out in the mess and tidy my way through, editing as I go.

I make my piles, and notes and separate them into their respective bins. This way, if I don’t get to it right away, all the ideas and materials are there, and it’s usually enough for me to trigger what the idea was for it, so that I can pick up where I left off when I come back to it.

It’s a trip to the bead and ribbon store for me: some fresh water pearls, seed beads, satin ribbons…

Yeah!

New studio and new collection!

Feeling good to get back to work for the first time in my new studio, which is still under-going renovations, I’m currently developing a new collection which is an extension of my Hive paper dress that I had constructed and exhibited last year. I’m beginning with re-drafting a tunic tank top, and making a sample (which I always do in my size, because hey, why not) in charcoal bamboo jersey. I love this jersey, it feels so silky and cooling against the skin, and delivers a savouring experience when I slip into it. I always push to source quality fabrics for this reason, but mostly because beautiful textiles contribute to my initial inspirations and how I am able to visualize a collection in its entirety. Coming up next is bamboo twill suiting it’s incredible, unlike any twill I have ever touched.

Starting from here

Embarking on a new project, and not knowing how to create it, sometimes it takes a bush whacking approach.

My initial idea has evolved over the weeks, leading me to a vague idea of how I’m going to tackle this project. My printing station has been set up ready to go this afternoon, but instead of pulling prints, I’ve made soup stock and completed prep for two separate meals while trying to figure out how to approach this hive telephone booth installation- in other words, I’m stalling.

For me, the first step is where I struggle with the most. Not knowing leads me to trying to figure it out in my head first, but that always leads me to stuck. Moving out of stuck and back into flow can be done in one motion-  just do. This means to make a mark on the blank canvas, cut the fabric anywhere, just marr the thing. To just do is to move out of planning and knowing and back into an energy of creating and problem solving.

Taking the first step, is taking any committed step, and a chain of consequences will begin. From there, the consecutive steps will reveal themselves.

With the first print, I’m committed, and the momentum begins.

You lucky Dragon!

Alas, the time has come.

The Year of the Dragon, is not only the title of a cheesy film I once auditioned for as a child actor in the early 80′s, but is commonly believed to be an aupiscious year for all, especially for fire breathing Dragons.

So whatever project you’ve been crafting, or goal you want to accomplish, this year go forward with full force. Know that the cosmos is working in tune with you. This is a powerful time to create your magic, move personal mountains, go for the gold.

It’s a fire breathing Dragon year, dear friends.

Now is your time.
